Stabilised soil for fibre-reinforced concrete solutions

Reinforced soil solutions offer increased flexibility in the design and construction of quay walls. Concrete facings,with an appropriate mixes of synthetic fibres improve durability and crack resistance, and reduce maintenance.

OUR SOLUTION

Horizontal soil pressure on quay walls can lead to serious failure, and requires attention during the design phase. Concrete element block walls may be subject to deterioration when reinforced with steel bar.

Reinforced soil layers combined with steel gabion facing, modular concrete blocks or thin concrete panels are used to build a vertical facing. Designed this way it can accommodate high surcharges, including mobile cranes.

Reinforced soil solutions
  • Horizontal layers of woven fabric or geogrids in the soil adjecent to the quay wall stabilise the soil internally.
  • The tensile strength of the reinforcement is mobilised by the weight of the soil and surcharge loads.

  • Salt penetrates the concrete and causes steel to rust.
  • This makes it expand leading to cracks in the concrete surface.
  • Sand and shells cause severe abrasion.
