Bank protection for supply canal resists erosion and brings back greenery

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Enkamat A20 provided immediate and maintenance free protection against erosion for canal improvement in the Netherlands.

Turbulent water raises erosion risk

Supply canals are used for the discharge and supply of water between two waterways, so levels can be controlled with the help of pumping stations. The supply canal in Nederweert (NL) receives water from the Zuid-Willemsvaart and flows into the Noordervaart. Modernisation of its water courses was required to meet downstream demand. However, high volumes of turbulent water can damage such supply canals, and the banks neede robust protection from erosion.

Enkamat A20's sustainable solution

When the project owner Rijkswaterstaat raised and improved the supply canal’s banks they selected Enkamat A20 to make them erosion proof. Enkamat A20 is a three-dimensional open polyamide mat, containing a mineral filter of chippings bound with bitumen, and with 40 to 50% voids.

Maintenance free and easy for vegetation to take root

The mat delivered immediate, sustainable and maintenance free protection from the moment it was installed. Enkamat’s three-dimensional structure means that vegetation easily takes root and finds its way through the mat. The canal’s banks were strengthened, their lifetime extended, and they quickly became green again in a natural way.
