Huge highway project encounters seismic challenges

The Mediterranean Bypass is a major infrastructure project in northern Morocco that crosses the earthquake prone Rif region. High seismic activity is one of the primary causes for instability in embankments, slopes and mountainsides. Therefore construction of the highway – vital for the region’s development - called for a highly flexible support technique. It needed high inertia to withstand the seismic effects, but should also apply the lowest possible load to the slopes themselves.

Earthquake resistant, flexible and light

The use of earth walls reinforced with Enkagrid PRO geogrids addressed both these issues. Our nonwoven geotextile Enka-Tex delivered separation and filtration functions between gabions and embankment materials. Enkadrain Wide was installed to ensure the drainage of the excavated embankments behind the walls. Enkagrid PRO’s large nominal aperture size (50x120mm) also aids installation in all weather conditions, including high winds – an advantage in this breezy coastal environment.

The challenges of the project and the walls’ geometry placed considerable demands on the long-term behaviour of the reinforcing material. Enkagrid PRO’s exceptional qualities in this area mean that the geogrid elongation during the walls’ lengthy service life will not exceed 1%.
