The South Europe Atlantic High Speed Railway is one of Europe’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. But even the grandest civil engineering schemes can be undone by water as it puts pressure on concrete structures not designed to resist it. The bridge abutments of the railway’s viaduct near Poitiers would rely strongly on the installed drainage system. It would need to meet the required discharge capacity, even under substantial earth pressure, and resist the tensile load from the compaction of the backfill.
EnkaDrain TPL/1s was chosen, and is one of our premium products. For 25 years engineers have used it replace gravel and deliver a more efficient and effective vertical drainage solution for bridge abutments, retaining walls, concrete foundations, tunnels and more. EnkaDrain TPL/1s is based on a three dimensional geospacer combined with a filter textile. This construction makes it lightweight, durable, flexible, quick to install, and able to offer 95% of void.

As an authorised product for the French railway authorities (SNCF), Enkadrain TPL/1s was the perfect choice to provide a complete vertical drainage solution for the viaduct’s abutments, from the bottom to the top of the wall. Its application will prevent water pressure building up behind this sensitive structure. Ease of handling – it can be cut with scissors and precisely fitted even in corners and pinchpoints – greatly aided installation. This was achieved at a rate of 25-30m2 per hour.

On coastal reclamation works, the finished ground profile may not settle evenly. Releasing the groundwater and reducing the pore water pressure quickly allows you to complete consolidation settlement while reclamation works and infrastructure installation are underway.
