Reinforcing railway ballast for an urgent station renovation

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Enkagrid and Enka-Tex deliver essential reinforcement and separation beneath railway ballast, during the renovation of a busy Budapest station.

Weak subsoils reduce load bearing capacity

Upgrading Budapest’s Vác railway station was a priority to keep up with its growing traffic. But as the line’s original designers discovered, the cohesive subsoils below present a problem. They lack the bearing capacity to carry the railway’s heavy dynamic loads. Vác’s modernisation had to find a way to prevent the undesirable mix of granular material and fine particles that would hamper the improvements.

Enka Solutions successfully stiffens soil

The answer was a combination of Enkagrid MAX and Enka-Tex NW, used for separation and reinforcement beneath the railway ballast. The Enka-Tex BS 20 W nonwoven geotextile ensured good separation and filtration. The Enkagrid MAX 40 established an effective interlock to stiffen the soil at the level of the grid.

Instant improvement and long term reliability

This Enka partnership delivered exactly the cost effective and long term reliable structure the designers need for the Vác work. Potential track failures were minimised. Service life was extended. And an instant increase in bearing capacity enabled the construction of the ballast without increasing the thickness of the sub base layer. Installation was also faster than traditional methods, and the carbon footprint impact lower.
