How Colbonddrain rapidly stabilised the region’s marshy soils in time for a critical upgrade of flood defences.

Strengthening the levees of New Orleans is a huge task. It could not be more important in safeguarding the area and its people from future flood disasters. Shoring up, stabilising and adding height to the earthen levees of the Great New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System is an enormous challenge. Conditions are difficult, and the soft marshy soils are hard to reinforce. Colbonddrain CX1000 was chosen for the drainage component of this life-protecting project.
Colbonddrain CX1000’s construction – an extruded polymer core fully covered with a filter fabric - gives it two distinct advantages. It has a higher tensile strength than rival solutions, and its corrugated core ensures fast water discharge. Both characteristics were essential for this project, led by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Their critical goal was to have the reinforcement in place before the next hurricane season.

Edge Drainage
Reinforced Soil Structures
Soil Consolidation & Land Reclamation
Colbonddrain’s ease and speed of installation made this possible. Its ability to deliver faster pore water dissipation was vital in these marshy soils. Colbonddrain dramatically accelerates consolidation and settlement time, allowing levees to be built much faster. More than 2,750,000 linear feet of Colbonddrain now sit in 300,000 holes throughout the LPV 109 Levee project, absorbing moisture, and keeping the vital levees stable. A remarkable achievement, delivered on time, with lasting effect.
Preventing damage to road structures by draining edges and soil embankments to maintain the soil's strength.
Cost-effective and sustainable schemes to optimise minimal available land space when creating new infrastructure. Reduces the need for removing in-situ materials or importing new materials.
On coastal reclamation works, the finished ground profile may not settle evenly. Releasing the groundwater and reducing the pore water pressure quickly allows you to complete consolidation settlement while reclamation works and infrastructure installation are underway.
