Marmaray suburban rail is a vital project for Istanbul. It joins the metro network across two continents, connecting Europe and Asia beneath the Boshphorus. In time it will also link the city to its growing suburbs. Shoring up and stabilising weak soils so they can be quickly built on is already a huge civil engineering challenge. However, the Marmaray project also wanted to avoid the costly and time-consuming methods of truck and machinery such a scheme would normally turn to.

Prefabricated Vertical Drains efficiently drain away pore-water created by the overburden, resulting in a stable subgrade ready for construction. PVDs can quickly stabilise soft soils even in 30-40m depths. Installing Colbonddrain CX 1000 PVDs allowed the contractor to dramatically reduce construction time. Colbonddrain delivered the calculated 0.9m settlement within six months rather than years.
