Successfully dewatering sludge when conditions resist normal dredging

When shallow water made dredging impossible, Enka-D-Tubes stepped in to drain sludge from a lake and rescue its holiday beaches.

Struggling to clear sediment

During storms and high winds, the beaches of Hungary’s shallow Lake Balaton become contaminated by sediment. This prevents holidaymakers at local hotels from swimming or sailing. Normal dredging was impossible; only a small dredger could have navigated the 1m depth. However, its minimal capacity would have caused significant problems transporting, storing and dewatering some 1500m3 of sludge.

Enka meets the challenges

Low & Bonar’s Enka-D-Tube dewatering tubes provided a solution that answered both storage and transport issues. Two tubes were delivered to the site, each able to contain 400m3 of drained sludge. Their special technical woven fabric efficiently filtered out the solid particles and returned the water to the lake. The resulting reduction in volume was dramatic – up to 90%.

Efficient solution in a small space

By using Enka-D-Tubes the contractor delivered an economical, efficient and ecological solution, and only a small area was needed to carry out the dewatering. Also the specially developed and enormously strong seams used in Low & Bonar dewatering products easily coped with the high pumping pressures and heavy density of sludge the project demanded.
