Turning marsh into workable, valuable land

PROJECT OVERVIEW

If Hemmingstedt’s marshland could be stabilised, it would become a useful commercial asset. Enkagrid was behind an ingenious solution that made it happen.

Heavy rain was enough to render the land useless

The German municipality of Hemmingstedt had long hoped to convert the former marshland around it into viable plots for agriculture and commerce. But when it rained heavily the soil was impossible to walk on, let alone build on. The bold answer was to build a free-floating foundation strong enough to bear substantial loads as the area was developed. Enkagrid made it possible.

Versatile solution for each type of load

Low & Bonar’s Enkagrid TRC bi-axial geogrids were used to stabilise the soil. With a combination of Twaron® aramid mesh for reinforcement, and a nonwoven geotextile for separation, it’s up to five times stronger than conventional geogrids, and with lower elongation. That gave it the resilience the scheme required. As each element was developed, EnkaRoad – Low & Bonar’s design program – calculated which geogrids and intermediate layers of fill were necessary to maintain the ideal load bearing capacity.

Transformation complete

Today 5-axle, 60-ton trucks drive across what was once impassable marsh, and a 12hectare greenhouse complex has extended across the site. A network of distribution and feeder roads, rainwater basins, a water tank and more have all been established thanks to this ingenious floating foundation, enabled by Enkagrid.

On coastal reclamation works, the finished ground profile may not settle evenly. Releasing the groundwater and reducing the pore water pressure quickly allows you to complete consolidation settlement while reclamation works and infrastructure installation are underway.
